Former Chief of Romania Retakes Office Over Rightist

By DONALD G. McNEIL Jr.

BUCHAREST, Romania, Dec. 10 — In what experts called a showing of political maturity, Romanians today gave former President Ion Iliescu another term in office, rejecting an ultranationalist by a large margin.

Exit polls indicated that Mr. Iliescu had won 70 percent of the vote in his runoff against Corneliu Vadim Tudor, who had run on a promise that he would "liquidate the mafia" that has drained the economy but is infamous for his magazines' screeds against Jews, Hungarians and Gypsies. The final vote will not be known for a day or two, but recent exit polls have been accurate here.

Minutes after the polls closed, an angry Mr. Tudor charged that the vote was "the biggest fraud in the history of Romania" and claimed that pollsters had been paid $150,000 to invent data, bribe election monitors and sabotage vote-tallying computers.

"How can Mr. Iliescu have won the whole pot?" he demanded, wondering if the apparent winning party and election officials "really think we are so stupid?" He said he would complain to an international human rights court and called the results "a victory of the Antichrist."

Television commentators refused even to discuss his charges. Emil Hurezeanu, who covers Romania for German radio, called the statement "delirium and self-parody"; and Cornel Nistorescu, editor of Evenimentul Zilei, a national daily, said: "We have more important things to discuss tonight."

When he voted at noon today, Mr. Tudor made an impromptu speech that accused his opponents of "crucifying" him and conducting a "lynching campaign." He said he was the victim of "a huge electoral fraud perpetrated by a former K.G.B. agent" — Mr. Iliescu — who is also "an atheist free-thinker with the blood of the people on his hands" as well as a tool of Moscow "since it lost Yugoslavia and now wants to get to the Balkans through Romania.

"Inside every child born is another Vadim Tudor, who will know what to do to protect this country," Mr. Tudor added. He said repeatedly that he is not a vengeful man and, borrowing Jesus' dying words, added: "Forgive them, God, for they know not what they do."

Mr. Iliescu said later that Mr. Tudor's failure to concede and his claims "show him for what he is: not qualified to be president or even a politician."

Mr. Iliescu's own victory speech, delivered seconds after the polls closed at 9 p.m., was a promise "to reform a suffocated economy in order to fight poverty, starvation and misery," to pursue integration with the European Union, membership in NATO and a partnership with the United States; to enforce laws against "those who have stolen our national property" and to pursue "dialogue, tolerance and cooperation."

During Mr. Iliescu's last presidency, from 1990 to 1996, he was seen as at heart a socialist who could not bring himself to close dying factories or shrink a bloated bureaucracy. Asked tonight if he had become a convert to Western-style market economics, he answered: "Life forces us to change. Those who don't are eliminated."

Despite intense interest in the race outside Romania, turnout appeared to be even lower than for the first round of voting two weeks ago, when it was less than 60 percent.

Exit polls suggested that Mr. Iliescu had picked up most of the votes for the four centrists and a moderate ethnic Hungarian candidate, who were eliminated in the first round. Many young voters, who heavily backed Mr. Tudor in the first round, apparently came over to Mr. Iliescu's side. One poll suggested that 15 percent of voters who picked Mr. Tudor the first time switched to Mr. Iliescu, while only 4 percent switched the other way.

Neither side conducted a get-out- the-vote campaign, as is routine in American elections.

Ilie Neacsu, secretary of Mr. Tudor's Greater Romania Party, said the idea was not even discussed because it "would be taken as electoral campaigning, or as propaganda." Under Romanian law, campaigning is illegal in the last 48 hours before an election.

Lucia Ceuca, a spokeswoman for Mr. Iliescu's Party of Social Democracy, said there was no voter-turnout plan, but mayors from her party were authorized to prod people to vote if turnout seemed low. In the 1996 election, she said, the party tried something like a get-out-the- vote effort. It hired political science students, some of them educated in the United States, to telephone voters, "but we received negative publicity — people said these were poisoned phone calls."

This year, confident of victory, they did not repeat the effort.

Political experts repeated their frustration that the center-right coalition that may have begun an economic turnaround last year had been unable to pick a single candidate and had knocked itself out of running in the first round, allowing an extremist to get close to the presidency.

Dorel Sandor, a political analyst, said that the world had seen "a rational vote in the second round" and that the new government "can rely on that maturity."

Editor's commentary:

Socialism and Deception

We rarely comment on articles but this one really needs to be looked closer. NY Times, unofficial newspaper of CPUSA that represents their views and ideology published several articles about Romanian presidential elections while elections in US were still undecided. Although NY Times writers and editors mentioned several times that impact of presidential elections in Romania is almost negligible because presidential powers are limited in post-Ceausescu's Romania, NY Times dedicated substantial efforts to inform us about it. Elections were presented as the fight against right, Vadim Tudor and his fascist bloc where all others are united against them just to prevent him and forces of darkness winning Romanian elections. People in Romania were urged not to vote for Tudor and to give their votes to communist candidate Iliescu. Sounds suspicious? You bet it is especially when you hear the magic percentage number 70%, reserved for victories of KGB and world communism in general. This trend is going on for quite some time and still is very popular around the world when communist bloc needs political victories. Since no one normal and sane would give his vote to communism, communists are forced to present or even create their opponents as fascists and right wing extremists in order to cover up fixing elections in their favor. Other good example is Czech Republic and current problems in state TV where news are censored every day because journalist refuse to recognize newly appointed boss that comes from supporters of Vaclav Klaus. Even Havel couldn't restrain himself and appealed publicly that newly appointed TV boss be removed in order to preserve "objectiveness" of information in Czech Republic. Vaclav Klaus is described as supporter of Margaret Thatcher and her politics and that immediately calls for prompt actions, labeling Klaus and his bloc as fascists and racists that has to be stopped by, who else then Havel himself and his socialist coalition. You sure do remember numerous news about Gypsies being harassed and attempts to place the wall around them and make ghetto in some Czech towns not to mention reports about Nazis and their violent actions. All that is always carefully linked to Klaus to discredit him although he has nothing to do with it.

The most important thing here is to understand that both fascists and communist are socialists, they represent extreme left (communists) and extreme right (fascists) of one and the same socialist party. Hitler and Stalin signed pact and destroyed Poland afterwards, carving it in two, western parts taken by Germany and eastern parts taken by USSR. However, destruction of Poland is often described in history books as brutal attack of Hitler and his fascist forces while Stalin and his communist forces are often not mentioned or even Hitler-Stalin pact that led to this event. France and Great Britain immediately declared war on Germany but never said a word about Stalin. One year later, Stalin destroyed Baltic republics as well while again hypocritical France and Great Britain remained silent. Thanks to covering these events, many even today don't realize that almost half of Poland is still occupied by Russia, that Kaliningrad is actually Konigsberg, home town of legendary German Teutonic knights that was never part of Russia until Stalin occupied it during WWII and once again hypocritical and weak France and Great Britain allowed this to be legitimized. War between Germany in Russia in 1941 was more of an internal dispute among socialist forces rather then fight between leftists and rightists as often presented. Communists are not leftists, real leftists are liberals. Hitler was a socialist not a conservative, his views are result of his interpretation of socialism rather then conservative views represented among rich and aristocracy. Hitler didn't belong to those groups and thus makes it highly unlikely that he was real rightist and conservative like Margaret Thatcher or Ronald Reagan often portrayed as fascists in communist propaganda. German aristocracy and the richest capitalists like Krups did embrace Hitler to save them from communism and French occupation of industrial regions of Germany but they never accepted his ideas or believed in his views entirely as presented once again by communist propaganda and often in English and French media in order to cover up their disgraceful and vicious treatment of Germany after WWI. Hitler never won any elections and never had any majority in Bundestag. He became chancellor because Hindenburg and the rest of German politicians gave up because of constant pressure exercised by France and Great Britain on Germany. What would you do if after 15 years (WWI ended in 1918 and Hitler became chancellor in 1933) your people had not enough food, you have to pay billions in war damages, your industry is completely taken by French?

Thanks to all this, world is still more concerned about fascism than communism. Communist forces are today represented as the one who defeated fascist forces and that's why they are supposed to be good ones!? Let's say Karadzic goes to war with Pol Pot and loses. Pol Pot then becomes a hero and a good guy because he has defeated Bosnian butcher. Ridiculous! The same goes for Romania. Who are you going to vote for, communist Iliescu and Ceausescu's supporter or some fascist-racist who sees Romania as the country free of Gypsies, Arabs and the rest of criminals and trash? What would you like, red hot poker in your eye or red hot poker in your ass? Please choose! Vadim Tudor is nothing but Iliescu's artificial creation. Iliescu needs Tudor to win because who the hell would vote for Ceausecu and his terror today? Even NY Times and the rest of the world communist propaganda have no answers on who are supporters of Tudor, who voted for him and where did he get all that support to become number one menace for the free world. They sure don't know who is supporting Iliescu either and how the hell he got 70% of the vote (magic KGB support number introduced by Putin last year) but that is understandable because Iliescu is a communist and thus he is their favorite so they will not expose their own. It doesn't take long to realize that Tudor is nobody and his ideas are just load of garbage. If someone thinks that getting rid of Gypsies, Arabs and the rest of criminals and trash will help Romania solve post-Ceausescu's problems then he is either insane and an idiot or he is just doing what he was told by Iliescu himself. NY Times didn't stop there and what was their real reason for publishing this was to quote Tudor saying that he is actually Baptist and that he wants Bush's support because they share similar views and ideas (racism, hatred and fascism)!? Once again, this was published while presidential race in US was still undecided. During that time, Al Gore wanted more support from Putin and world communism by declaring that he will not change already devastating and catastrophic Clinton's foreign policy and as a final lunacy mentioned nominating Richard Holbrooke as the next secretary of state!? Communist forces did significantly helped Gore in making presidential race close but not enough to help him win. CPUSA was a major contributor to his win in Pennsylvania and several other states. If CPUSA didn't help him, Florida would not be important at all, Bush would have won easily as predicted before the elections even took place. But as the last ditch effort to smear Bush's name with releasing his DUI arrest story only couple of days before elections. Romania story was launched in December as the last ditch effort to help Gore win court battle. Truly said and truly disappointing. If they can't think of something else then it is better to shut up and not make fool of themselves.

You probably wonder what happened with Czech Republic. Is Klaus another artificially created fascist by Havel or is he a real rightist falsely portrayed as fascist. You can read Klaus' interview to Reason here and draw some conclusions about him. Some excerpts:

Klaus: I had a long interview with a trade union paper on this issue a few days ago. They asked me whether I would allow a money-losing, old plant in Slovakia to be sold to foreigners. I laughed and said, "Do you know what you are saying? A money-losing, run-down plant and a foreigner wants to buy it? We should be lucky if we find a fool in the West who wants to buy it and try to make it profitable. Everyone will benefit from that, except perhaps the Western investor." They had to agree.

This makes him dangerous to communist elements and supporters of Soviet based economies and target of labels from communist propaganda machinery. He is something completely different and entirely opposite to Tudor. Klaus is a real person with strong believes in capitalism and market economy but at the same time he is against monopolies of any kind (Bill Gates and MS are not something that Klaus likes) but it is hard to call him conservative or rightist not to mention Tudor attributes. Klaus is often correctly called liberal although he is strong supporter of capitalism. You have probably noticed two Guestbook entries logged after our comments on Florida counting dispute. First one labeled us as liberals and the next one labeled us as conservative!? You can't be both at the same time but this obvious mixup is because of communist propaganda that places both liberals and communists among leftists and conservatives and fascists to the right. Fact is that FS Net goal is to achieve absolute objectiveness that sometimes shift to the left and sometimes to the right but never shifts to socialism at all. Socialism is not the way, socialism is the dead end where utopian dreams collapse while opportunists grab all that can be taken. Communist propaganda often presents socialism as the way to help poor but Marx's definition of socialism is very different and much more realistic. Socialism is just a transitional phase where everyone gets according to his work and his results while communism is the final stage where even those who are not able to work or don't even deserve any help can be taken care of because society is economically strong to support them. This is what Havel wants to push into Czech Republic although it was only a decade ago that Stalinism reigned there while destroying entirely economy and all assets of former CSSR. Only someone who is utterly insane or works for Moscow would do such a thing. All attempts of Klaus to transform Czech economy are sabotaged by Moscow and its stooges in Czech Republic. What more to say about Havel when he proposed Madeline Albright to become president of Czech Republic!? Man needs serious psychiatric help. Albright, however, rejected that idea and mentioned her own idea of abolishing rule that only born Americans can become presidents because she was not and that would allow her to run for the president of U.S.!? The only reason that Clinton let her become secretary of state is because he intentionally wanted to ruin his foreign policy and let Moscow score big on all fronts. When asked about Serbia and Balkan as failure, Albright replied that she sees no failure because Milosevic was ousted although not a single war criminal from Serbia was not extradited to the Hague tribunal and nothing significantly changed in Serbia thus leaving Serbia's status as Russian colony. Moronic Clinton administration got the idea that removing Milosevic and replacing him with another Nazi will solve all their problems but actually only amplified them thousand fold. Thanks to this bad deal there is no opposition in Serbia and upcoming chaos and anarchy are coming soon. Clinton doesn't give a damn because that is going to hit Bush's administration similar to what Carter did with Iran and later Reagan administration was blamed for selling weapons to Iran in order to rectify damage done by Carter. The only thing Bill Clinton was good at was sabotaging American foreign policy and American interests in favor of Moscow and Beijing.

More reasons for world communism to hate Klaus and depict him as a fascist:

In a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Klaus criticised the so-called Third Way thinking championed by British Prime Minister Tony Blair, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and U.S. President Bill Clinton: "The third way is nothing but a new attempt at saving socialism. It is a euphemistic and dangerous label for the second way, i.e. socialism," Klaus told the audience in Davos. He went on to say that in international politics the third way was surfacing in the spurious, inconsequential and artificial uniting of Europe.

This excerpt is from Radio Prague's Current Affairs. We call it Moscow Way. What to expect from Marxists Schroeder or Bill Clinton who got most of his campaigning money from the world communism.

Why all this? Sooner or later there will be some real political force in Serbia that can change things and free Serbia of Russian imperialism. Now you know the scenario, those forces will be presented as fascists and the world will be appealed to support Nazi Kostunica and the rest of his Russian stooges who present themselves as leftists and progressive forces as Mira Markovic used to describe her party JUL. Milosevic sucesfully created SRS and his Croat leader Seselj who lost elections in 1997 because of annulment. West overwhelmingly supported Milosevic and his candidate Milutinovic to prevent Seselj from becoming president of Serbia. Seselj was presented as a fascist and racist similar to Tudor and he was introduced to political life in Serbia by Milosevic himself who supported him since '80s. Kostunica's and DOS philosophy is almost identical to Havel's and we can bet that they will do anything to sabotage all who dare to bring real changes to Serbia or those who want to get out like Djukanovic and Montenegro. It has been already announced that government policy will be social policy, that less people are going to work and more to rely on social welfare thus making people dependent on the government instead of developing Serbian economy like Klaus wants to do in Czech Republic. Over longer periods of time, people will become entirely dependent on the government and thus try to defend it every time they are asked for, obediently without thinking even if that means their death and destruction. That is the way of Stalinist society where initiatives are discouraged, where obedience and stupidity are awarded, where tomorrow is yesterday, where hope doesn't exist. Serbia is currently completely free of anti-socialist elements and all who refuse to serve Russian masters. Kostunica's supporters, various chauvinists, fascists and Stalinists told us to stop our work because Serbia is free. Like I said, Serbia is more occupied than ever but if you claim that Serbia is free then how about closing down your Moscow clone of FS Net, Free Serbia - Other Villains from Serbia? What is the purpose of that site now or FreeB92? Veran Matic and his Soros gang has taken long time ago their former offices in B92 but FreeB92 and B2-92 still exist. Why? The only reason we see here is to further obstruct all who are not pleased with Nazi Kostunica, other socialist garbage and the rest of Russian stooges in Serbia. This is an act of a desperate man who knows that he has lost but his fears are stronger. He fights as a mad dog that will not stop until he is dead similar to Ceausescu and his last days in Romania. They are fooling themselves if they think that this will last for long. It ends on January 20th when Clinton gets out of the White House. It is not a coincidence that Serbian government is going to be formed by that day, conveniently for Clinton to claim success of his failed foreign policy. Europe and the world are going to change soon and socialism is going to disappear quickly.

Czech TV Union Calls Strike Over Dispute with Boss

PRAGUE, Czech Republic (Reuters) - Rebel staff at state-run Czech Television called a strike Monday to raise the stakes in a fight for control over the airwaves with their new chief.

The strike was called to support staff occupying Czech TV's newsroom to protest the Dec. 20 appointment of Jiri Hodac as director-general. The staff say he has political links and would interfere with the news. Hodac denies any bias.

``Effective Jan. 1 ... the Czech Television Independent Union Organization in Prague began a strike to support its demands with the aim to defend the right for uncensored broadcasting of Czech Television,'' the union said in a statement calling for sympathetic action from other unions.

Rebel staff vowed they will continue to broadcast the ''pirate'' newscasts they have been sending from the occupied studios in spite of a blackout on terrestrial transmissions imposed by Hodac.

At the moment Hodac airs makeshift news put together by a team loyal to him or nothing. But viewers with satellite and cable reception can still see the rebel newscasts, which have focused on their conflict.

The unions said the strike action would continue until Hodac stops all black-outs of the rebel newscasts and resigns. They also demand that security guards stop blocking the station's premises.

``With the strike we get leverage to change the regime of the security here, so it works rather for us than against us,'' one of the rebel journalists, Petr Kopecky, told Reuters.

Earlier Monday, Hodac came to the newsroom with several policemen and checked the identity of several dozen staff, some of whom have spent over a week in the newsroom. He was due to meet Premier Milos Zeman later Monday.

President Vaclav Havel and the vast majority of Czechs back the rebels. More than 100,000 people have signed a petition in support and thousands have rallied outside the studios.

Although the new director-general has threatened to storm the studios, police refuse to intervene.

Hodac was chosen by the Czech TV Council, dominated by nominees of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS) to whom the staff accuse Hodac of being linked, and the ruling Social Democrats. The two parties have a power-sharing pact, under which the ODS keeps the minority cabinet afloat in return for various concessions.

The council and leaders of the main political parties were due to meet in separate sessions on the situation Tuesday.

The ODS is the only major party still backing Hodac.
